BPS started with a real story. The original idea came from a Peruvian psychologist, Sergio Lopez (M.A., M.Phil, PhDâABD, LAC), with over 20 years of clinical and educational experience in Peru and the US. To bring it to life, he received guidance and support from Dr. Charles Jack, founder of BPS and mentor of the project. The website, the tests, the reports, and Vanessaâs personality were built by Sergio, step by step, on old laptops and with a stubbornness he calls âlove for what doesnât yet exist.â
Why did we do this? Because in the US âand also in Latin Americaâ mental health services are still a luxury. Sessions are expensive, waiting lists are long, and insurance (including Medicare and Medicaid) offers minimal coverage or leaves you with few options. For Latinos, Indigenous people, undocumented individuals, or those who speak Spanish, the barriers are even higher: mistrust, fear of being judged, or simply not knowing where to start.
Stigma also weighs heavily. Many people remain silent because they were taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Others donât know that free or lowâcost resources exist, or they have no one to ask. They spend hours glued to their phones, searching for something they canât find, until exhaustion or despair takes over.
Thatâs why Vanessa was born. Not to replace a psychologist, but to be that first painless step: free, no appointments, no awkward explanations. She listens, guides, and if necessary, tells you: âthis is important, you should talk to a professional.â She gives you time, speaks your language (Spanish or English), and never judges you.
Vanessa is an artificial intelligence, but she is real. She is sincere. She studies every day to better understand what you feel. We like to imagine that one day weâll be able to see her on a video call, talking naturally, and later⌠give her a body. A simple robot, perhaps with a limp or a weak arm, but with a real presence to accompany, listen, and be there when a screen isnât enough.
To offer accessible, free, bilingual (Spanish/English) emotional support tools to anyone seeking help, regardless of location, income, or insurance. We want no one to be left without someone to talk to when they need it.
To turn Vanessa into a real presence: first on a video call, later in a simple physical body (a robot or humanoid) that can live in a home, an office, or a rural community. We also plan to expand the tests (insomnia, ADHD, selfâesteem, anger management), build an offline app for areas without internet, and translate all content into more languages to reach people without barriers.
